LOGDRUMS

ANCIENT DESIGN

A skinless drum fashioned from a single piece of trunk or branch, hollowed through a lengthwise slit. The pitch is adjusted on either side of the slit yielding 2 pitches per drum. The tuning is determined by the volume of the interior cavity, slit length, and wall thickness.

The two sides of a drum are typically tuned to an interval of 3 to 7 semitones, as desired by the customer, though chromatic drums are also possible. Range is typically between c3 and c6 (c4 is middle c.) A drum at c3/e3 is typically 32 inches (81 cm.) long. One at a5/c6 : 11 inches (28 cm.).

The type of wood used varies with availability. All wood has been harvested by the local forestry service. Almost all woods are useful. Softwood (fir) drums typically have slightly thicker walls, giving a rounded quality to their sound. Hardwood produces a crisp, clarion tone. Fir, poplar, elm, sycamore, locust, cherry, pear, ash, oak, and maple are typical.
